Wonder - Part Five JUSTIN

 

※ 작가는 저스틴 단락에서 대문자를 하나도 쓰지 않았다. 나...할때 i 는 물론, 문장 첫글자도....그래서 뭔가 굉장히 문장이 어수선해 보인다. 내가 뉘앙스까지는 알아먹을 재간이 없지만, 딱 문장 써진거만 봐도 작가가 저스틴이라는 캐릭터를 어떻게 표현하고 싶은건지 대략 느낌이 왔다.

 

[ Olivia's Brother ]
take by surprise	깜짝놀라다, 약간 충격적으로 다가오다	The first time I meet olvia's little brother, I have to admit I'm totall taken by surprise.
		I'm from brooklyn! ※ 어기가 비아 남친인 저스틴이 루이지애나에서 연주하는 음악이라는 말을 듣고, 루이지애나에서 왔어? 하고 물으니, 저스틴이 브룩클린에서 왔어. 라고 대답하는 장면이 나온다. 비아랑 저스틴이 나가고 어기랑 잭이 그말을 따라하면서 웃는 장면이 나오는데~ 그게 왜 웃긴지 난 잘 이해가 가지 않았다. 그래서 번역본을 찾아보니 거기에는 그냥 "남자친구랑 재미있게 놀아" 라고 번역이 되어 있었다. 왜지?
		I couldn't keep my eyes off of her. ※ 참 맘에 드는 문장이라 ㅋ 적어놓음
give off vibe	분위기를 자아내다	She kind of gives off that vibe without even meaning to.
without meaning to	의도치 않게
right in the eye	똑바로 쳐다보다	She looks you right in the eye when she talks t you, like she's daring you.
which rocked	기분이 짱 좋음	I asked her out and she said yes, which rocked
		I know the one word she didn't use was "deformed," though, because that word would have registered with me. 난 그녀가 '기형' 이라는 단어를 사용하지 않았다는 걸 알았다. 왜냐하면 그 말이 내 기억에 남을 것이기 때문이다.
immaculate	티없이 깔끔한	Her room is immaculate.
		Let's face it. 현실을 직시해.

 

[ Valentine's Day ]
nothing but	그저(단지) ~에 지나지 않다	I mean, my tics are always there, but they're not like they used to be when I was little: nothing but a few hard blinks now, the occasional head pull.
folk	사람들(비격식)	I'm definitely stressing about meeting her folks.
put me at ease	편안히 해주다	Put me at ease rignt away/
get into	시작하다 (get to 도달하다)	Olivia's parents ask me about my music, how I got into the fiddle and stuff like that.
clue	힌트	My parents don't have a clue about what I want to do with my life.
stink	냄새를 풍기다	She stank so much I can't even tell you!
interject	말참견하다	The mom interjects as she cleans the floor, to see if I'm okay with his bringing home some homeless guy's dog.
luck out	운이 좋다	She's a happy dog, like she knows she lucked out that day finding this family.

 

[ Our Town ]
lead role	주연	Olivia dares me to try out for the lead role, the stage manager, and somehow I get it.
fluck	요행(비격식)	Total fluke.
manic	정신없는	Mr.Davenport, the drama teacher, is already manic about the whole thing.
through the grapevine	소문으로	I heard through the grapevine that he'd been planning on doing the elephant man but changed it to our town at the last minute, and that change took a week off of our rehearsal schedule.

 

[ Ladybug ]
recite	암송하다, 나열하다	I'm reciting: yes, the sun's come up over a thousand times.
prompt	(배우가 대사를 잊었을 때) 대사를 상기시켜주는 말	All that can happen in a thousand days, olivia prompts me, reading from the script.

 

[ The Bus Stop ]
gravelly	걸걸한	He's got a low gravelly voice, like a little tough guy.
rascal	악동	He kind of liiks like one of those little-rascal kids in old black-and-white movies, like he should be wearing a newsboy cap and knickers.
knicker	반바지
fist	낚다 (여기서는 주머니에서 꺼내다로 쓰임)	I fish a dollar out of my pocket and watch him cross the street to the grocery store on the corner. There's an awkward silence and then she starts fishing through her bag and pulls out her wallet. [Rehearsal] I opened it up and fished inside until I found what I was looking for. [Daybreak]
laughs dying on their lips	입에서 죽어가는 웃음들. 즉 웃음기가 사라지다	They look at me, laughs dying on their lips when they see me, ice cream cones at old angles.
		Mess with him again and you will be very, very sorry. ※ 여기선 sorry가 미안해가 아니겠지. 한번만 더 걔 건드리면, 재미없을거야~ 정도로 읽으면 되지 않을까 싶다.
in unison	일제히	They nod in unison, ice cream dripping onto their hands.

 

[ Rehearsal ]
pluck	용기, 결단	It's not written that way, but Mr.davenport thinks it adds an extra-folksy element to have the stage manager plucking on a fiddle.
out of blue	뜬금없이, 난데없이	She asks out of the blue. Then out of the blue, the Eddie guy grabbed my hood as I passed by him, yanking it really hard so I was pulled backward and fell flat on my back. [Alien] And again, out of the blue, he got all choked up. [Awards]

 

[ Bird ]
entitle	자격을 주다	You're entitled, olivia.
dealt(deal)	처리하다, 대처하다	You've dealt with a lot your whole life.
fragile	부서지기 쉬운	And When she's fragile like this, she's a little lost bird looking for its nest.
