Fate smiled and destiny laughed  숙명이 미소짓고 운명이 웃음을 터트렸다

 

[ Why I Didn't Go to School ]
petrified 극도로 무서워하는  Since I've never been to a real school before, I am pretty much totally and completely petrified.

 

[ How I Came to Life ]
cleft  (사람 턱의) 옴폭 들어간 부분 They told Mom and Dad I had a cleft palate and some other stuff going on.
plate 구개
anomalies 이상(기형) They called it "small anomalies."
grumpy 성격이 나쁜 But Mom says that even though everyone in the room was kind of grumpy.
practically 사실상, 거의 They were practically fighting, because Mom was hysterical and the farting nurse was yelling at her to stay calm.
faint 희미한, 실신하다 He had fainted!
overcome 극복하다 (th 붙으면 3인칭 단수 현재형. 고어체) Everyone born of God overcometh the world  하느님께로서 난 자 세상을 이기느니라
mushed-up 엉망진창인 But she says that when she looked down into my tiny mushed-up face for the first time, all she could see was how pretty my eyes were.
by the way 덧붙이자면 Mom is beautiful, by the way.

 

[ Christopher's House ]
bummed 낙담한, 실망한 I was really bummed when Christopher moved away three years ago.
duel 결투 We used to spend hours playing with our Star Wars action figures and dueling with our lightsabers.

fraction 분수 I mean, come on, Auggie, you know how bad I am at fractions.
pat 쓰다듬다 ...said Lisa, patting my knee.

squeeze 꼭 쥐다 I saw Mom look at Lisa, who reached over and squeezed her hand.

 

[ Driving ]
drool 침을 흘리다 I wouldn't drool all over her.
slaughter 도살 So sending him off to middle school like a lamb to the slaughter.
flounder 허우적대다 / 넙치, 도다리 And that great shot of you holding that flounder on the boat!
see the point 이해하다 I didn't see the point in telling you and having you get all worked up about it unnecessarily.
get work up 흥분하다, 화가나다
in hindsight 돌이켜보면  
tush 엉덩이(속어)  
not even 심지어 I started laughing, not even because I thought he was being that funny but because I wans't in the mood to stay mad anymore.
groggily 비틀거리면서 Via said groggily.

 

[ Paging Mr.Tushman ]
paging 안내방송을 하다  
right away 바로 I started giggling right away.
mumble 웅얼거리듯 말하다 I mumbled, dropping my hand into his hand while I looked down at his feet.
into A A에 관심이 있다 And you're into science, right?
elective 선택과목 We have a couple of great science elective at Beecher.
accuing 비난하는 듯한 (accuse  혐의를 제기하다) I said to Mom in my accusing voice.

 

[ Nice Mrs.Garcia ]
though 그래도, 그렇긴 하지만 And the few people who were there didn't seem to notice me at all, though that may have been because they didn't see me.
sort of 일종의, 어느정도, 뭐랄까 I sort of hid behind Mom as I walked.
since 때문에, ~므로 (접속사로 쓰일때) When I looked up at her, Mrs.Garcia's eyes dropped for a second. It was so fast no one else would have noticed, since the rest of her face stayed exactly the same.
내가 그녀를 올려다 봤을때, 미스 그라시아는 순간 눈을 내리깔았다. 그녀 얼굴의 다른 부분은 정확히 그대로 였으므로, 아무도 눈치채지 못할 정도로 빨랐다.
firm 견고한, 단단한 Wow, what a firm grip!  정말 꽉 쥐었군!
late pass 지각계 정도로 이해하면 됨  Mrs.G, I need a late pass.
(지각했을 경우 오피스에 가서 지각계를 받아다 담임샘께 제출해야 함)
run the place 이곳을 운영하다 Mrs.G's actually the one who runs the place. 미스G가 이곳의 실질적인 운영자에요.
bulletin 공고 Mom said, pointing to one of the photographs on Mrs.Garci's bulletin board.
    You've just made my day.  덕분에 기분이 좋아졌어요.

 

[ Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte ]
pity 동정하다 I pity the fool?
portrait 초상화 It is.... are you ready for this... a portrait of me!
exaggerating 과장하다 I'm not exaggerating when I say this, but my heart literally started beating like I'd just run the longest race in the world.

She got really nervous and turned pale and literally broke into a sweat within a minute, and then she came up with some lame excuse about really having to go to ghe bathroom. [The Cheese Touch]

What I remeber her most from the day Grans died is Mom literally crumpling to the floor in slow, heaving sobs, holding her stomach like someone had just punched her. [A Tour of the Galaxy]

Anyway, about five minutes after I got there, Henry and Savanna were standing next to me, literally hovering over me. [The Halloween Party]

the lay of the land 상황을(형세를) 살피다 I figure they could take you around the school a bit, show you the lay of the land, so to speak.

    None of them looked over at me or Mom: they stood by the door looking straight at Mr.Tushman like their lives depended on it.
아무도 나나 엄마를 쳐다보지 않았다. 그들은 그것에 자기들 목숨이 달려있기라도 한 양, 교장실 문만 뚫어져라 바라보며 그 옆에 서 있었다.
ins and outs 구석구석, 속속들이 August, these guys have been students at Beecher Prep since kindergarten, though, of course, they were in the lower-school building, but they know all the ins and outs of the middle-school program.
on account of ~때문에, ~으로 It wasn't my favorite subject on account of the fact that I don't really have ears.
get going (쉬었다가) 계속가다, (다시) 떠나다 Okay, so why don't you guys get goint?

 

[ The Grand Tour ]
gross 중대한, 전체의 This is a gross science poster.
smirk 히죽 웃다 ....explained Charlotte, ignoring Julian's smirk

 

[ The Performance Space ]
put on 공연하다, 상연하다 She was describing the play they had put on last year, which was Oliver!
aisle 통로 Julian ran after her, and then turned around halfway down the aisle.
all the way 항상 On opening night, my parents were all the way in back of the auditorium.
sarcastically 비꼬는 투로 ...said Julian sarcastically.

"Ya think?" he said scrcastically. [Why I didn't Sit with August the First Day of School]
backdrop 배경 You can paint the backdrops.
dork 얼간이 Only dorks take leadership.
obnoxious 아주 불쾌한 Julian, you're being so obnoxious!
No offense 다른 뜻은 없어  
annoy 짜증나게 하다, 귀찮게 하다 He sounded like he was annoyed.
    What's the deal with your face? 너 얼굴이 왜 그래?
already 이제 Let's just go to the library already.
(이미, 벌써라는 뜻이지만, 이제 가자! 할때도 쓰임)
jerk 얼간이 Julian's a jerk.
dude 녀석 But, dude, you're gonna have to talk.
insisted 고집하다, 주장하다 He insisted.
stumble 발이 걸리다, 휘청거리다 I started to follow her, but Julian cut right in frot of me, which actually made me stumble backward.

    질문!!
"Is she a teacher?" Julian said.
"So she's not a real teacher!" said Julian.
왜 said의 위치가 다를까? 아시는 분은 댓글 좀.....큼큼~~

 

[ The Deal ]
eyeing A A에 시선을 고정하다 ...said Mon, eyeing me.
(keep an eye on ~ 계속 지켜보다, 감시하다)
lost track of ~를 놓치다 I lost track of the time. 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다.
schlep 마지못해가다, 힘든일 It'll be a bit of a schlep, though.
tug 잡아당기다, 끌어당기다 ...I said, tugging at her pocketbook.

 

[ Home ]
    How's it go?  결과가 궁금할때~
lick 핥다 My dog, Daisy, followed me into the room, jumped on the bed, and started licking me all over my face.
nugding 쿡 찌르다 She sat down, nudging Daisy over.
rub 문지르다 I nodded, but I kept looking at Daisy, kissing her on the nose and rubbing her ear until her back leg did that little flea-scratch shake.
go out of his way (to do something) (~를 하기위해) 특별히 애쓰다, 노력하다 Mr.Tushman went out his way to tell me what sweet kids they are.

 

[ First-Day Jitters ]
jitter 안절부절못하다, 신경과민  
up until a few days before 며칠전 까지만 해도  
all along 내내 And I heard him tell Mom that he now thought she had been right all along.
relieved 안도하는, 다행으로 여기는 When Dad told her that he and Via wanted to walk me to school today, too, since it was on the way to the subway station, Mom seemed relieved that we would all be going together.
roam 돌아다니다 In general, I try to avoid blocks where there are lots kids roaming around.

only once 꼭 한번만 Only once did I look up to see some girls looking my way and whispering with their hands cupped over their mouths, but they looked away when they saw me notice them.

 

[ Locks ]
hesitate 망설이다 She had only hesitated for a millionth of a second, but I could tell the moment she saw me.

kind of no-nonsense 진지한 목소리로 .....she said, kind of no-nonsense.
plop 퐁당, 툭 떨어지다 The he plopped his backpack up really high on the right side of the desk so it was kind of like a wall between his desk and mine.
resist 저항하다, 참다 I resisted spining the combination when I sat down, eveh though everyone else was doing it, because she had specifically told us not to.
자리에 앉았을 때는 다들 자물쇠를 돌리느라 바빴지만, 손대지 말라는 선생님의 말씀이 떠올라 꾹 참았다.
frustrated 좌절감을 주다, 방해하다 He was getting frustrated and kind of cursing under his breath.

[ Around the Room ]
pursue 추구하다 She left her job on Wall Street about six years ago to pursue her "dream" and teach kids.
scrunch up 찡그리다 Julian scrunched up his face and started tapping his forehead like he was thinking really hard.

 

[ Lamb to the Slaughter ]
braid 땋은 것 Why do you have that tiny braid in the back of your hair?
apprentice 견습생 A Padawan in a Jedi apprentice.

 

[ Choose Kind ]
zoom  (아주 빨리) 붕[쌩/휭] 하고 가다 I just zoomed out of the class and down the hall and sat down as far from the front as possible.
faced us 우리와 마주보다 When the second bell rang, everyone got quiet and the teacher turned around and faced us.
doodling 낙서 I was mostly doodling in my notebook while he talked, but every once in a while I would sneak a look at the other students.

crack 농담을 던지다(비격식) Jack cracked, which made everyone laugh.
For some reason, me and jack started cracking up. (Jack Will 파트에 또 나옴)
strok 쓰다듬다 He paused and stroked his beard.

No matter what 무슨일이 있을지라도  

 

[ Lunch ]
stampede 우르르 몰려가다 So I moved to an empty table and just waited for everyone to finish stampeding and the lunchroom teacher to tell us what to do next.
concentrate 집중하다 Instead, I just concentrated on opening my backpack, pulling out my lunch bag, and slowly opening the aluminum-foil wrapping of my sandwich.
out of the corners of their eyes 눈꼬리로 I knew that people were nudging each other, watching me out of the corners of their eyes.
cleft palate 갈라진 구개 I had a surgery to fix my cleft palate when I was a baby.
jaw And even though I had jaw-alignment surgery a few years ago.
to be mean 못되게 굴다 I know the kid wan't trying to be mean.
tortoise 거북 I eat like a tortoise.
prehistoric swamp 선사시대의 늪, 습지 Like some prehistoric swamp thing.

 

[ The Summer Table ]
reed 갈대 I just picture, like, a reed of grass being a summer thing.
petal 꽃잎 That kind of sounds like the work 'petal' which I thing of as a summer thing, too.
Cool beans 쿨한 녀석  
tan 햇볕에 타다 She had a tan, and her eyes were green like a leaf.

 

[ One to Ten ]
sore 아픔, 상처 I just had a plain old sore throat, she'd ask.
(오랫동안 갖고 있는 평범한 목아픔 -> 그냥 목이 좀 아프기만 해도)

 

[ Padawan ]
snotty 콧물 범벅의 She added snottily, and then practicaly slammed my bedroom door shut as she left the room.

snuggle 바싹 파고들다 I was snuggling with Daisy on my bed when Dad came to tuck me in later.

scooch 조금 움직이다 He scooched Daisy over gently and lay down next to me on the blanket.

huffy 발끈 성을 내며 You've been kind of huffy with her all night long.
blame ~을 탓하다 I'm as much to blame for sending you to school as she is.
    Never a dull moment.
지루할 틈이 없지.
relieve 안도하게 하다 I was relieved because I really was afraid she'd want to "talk", and I just didn't feel like doing that.

 

[ Wake me up when September Ends ]
contagious 감염되는 They would take the longest way around me to avoid bumping into me in any way, like I had some germ they could catch, like my face was contagious.
unsuspecting 의심하지 않는, 낌새를 못채는 In the hallways, which were always crowded, my face would always surprise some unsuspecting kid who maybe hadm't heard about me.
pimple 여드름, 뾰루지 Some of them had pimples.
    I don't bite.
난 깨물지 않아. (해치지 않으니 날 피하지마, 라는 뜻으로 종종 사용함.)

※ 친하게 지내던 브라질친구가 했던 말이 생각이 난다. 영어에 자신이 없는 한국맘들이 본인이 말을 걸어도 단답으로 대답하고 슬금슬금 피하니까, 영어 좀 못하면 어떠냐고, 자기가 다시 말해줄수 있고, 더 천천히 말해줄수 있다면서 저 말을 했다. 피하지 말고 친구가 되어 달라고 ^^;;

 

[ Jack Will ]
coincidence 우연의 일치 I figured either the teachers were told to put me and jock together, or it was a totally incredible coincidence.

I heard that Julian was going as Jango Fett, which was a weird coincidence. (Costumes 파트에 또 나옴)
for some reason 무슨 이유인지 For some reason, me and Jack started cracking up.
무슨 이유인지 잭과 나는 그만 웃음보가 빵 터졌다.
pants 바지 I swear, I think he wet his pants.
pants를 미국에서는 주로 바지로, 영국에서는 속옷(팬티)로 사용한다고 함
settle down 정리하다, 안정화시키다 We were laughing so hard that the teacher, Mr. Roche, had to ask us to settle down.

sundial 해시계 Later, after we finished reading about how ancient Sumerians built sundials, Jack whispered.
squirt 찍 짜다 I think you should get a secret squirt gun or something and attach it to your eyes somehow.

    Jack clapped his hand over his horehead and started laughing hysterically.

[ Mr.Browne's October Precept ]
deed 행위 Your deeds are your mounments.
assignment 과제 Our homework assignment was to write a paragraph about what we thought the precept meant or how we felt about it.
outlast ~보다 더 오래가다 The thingw we do outlast our mortality.
mortality 언젠가는 죽어야 함
mounment 기념물 The things we do are like monuments that people build to honor heroes after they've died.

 

[ Apple ]
teensy-weensy tiny (구어) She was cutting one of the apples we had just gotten at the farmets' market into teensy-weensy bites so I could eat it.
evite 이메일초대(신조어) We set out the evites kind of late.
    I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
어디 사과가 사과나무에서 멀리 떨어지겠니.
(그 부모에 그 자식이라는 의미)

 

[ Halloween ]
so long as ~하는 동안은 So lont as it's politically corret.
blaster 우주총 What about blasters?
squint 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 보다 When Summer talks, especially when she's excited about something, her eyes squint like she's looking right at the sun.
dorky 바보의, 이상한 I know what I'd really want to go as, but I think it might be too dorky.
papier-mache 혼응지
(젖으면 말랑해지고 마르면 굳는 종이)
I'd make the head out of papier-mache, and paint the horn gold and make the mane gold, too.

[ School Pictures ]
phobia 공포증 I guess you could call it a phobia.
aversion 혐오감 It's and "aversion", which is a word I just learned in Mr.Brone's class.
    There, I used it in a sentence.
자, 나는 이렇게 배운 단어를 문장속에서 활용할 줄 안다.
portrait 초상화 Unfortunately, while I managed to avoid having the portait taken, I couldn't get out of being part of the class picture.
suck on 빨아먹다 The photographer looked like he'd just sucked on a lemon when he saw me.

 

[ The Cheese Touch ]
go around 자주 ~하다 I didn't realize this at first because it's not like kids go around touching each other that much in middle school anyway.
my least favorite 내가 가장 싫어하는 But last Thursday in dance class, which is, like, my lease favorite class, Mrs.Atanabi, the teacher, tried to make Ximena Chin be my dance parter.
broke into 갑자기 ~하기 시작하다 She got really nervous and turned pale and literally broke into a sweat within a minute, and then she came up with some lame excuse about really having to go to ghe bathroom.

let her off the hook 곤경에서 벗어나게 하다 Anyway, Mrs.Atanabi let her off the hookm because she ended up not making anyone dance together.
classify 분류하다 Then yesterday in my science elective, we were doing this cool mystery-power investigation where we had to classify a substance as an acid or a base.

huddle 옹송그리며 모이다 Everyone had to heat their mystery powers on a heating plate and make abservations, so we were all huddled around the powders with out notebooks.
squish 으깨지다 Now, there are eight kids in the elective, and seven of them were squished together on one side of the plate while one of them-me-had loads of room on the other side.

scoot 서둘러가다 She said, so Tristan and Nino scooted over to my side.
    I want to go on record as saying that.
난 공식적으로 그렇게 말하고 싶다.
fraction of a second 순식간에 He moved this foil off the plate just as my powder began to melt, too, which is why I went to move mine off the plate, and ten my hand accidentally bumped his hand for a fraction of a second.
experiment 실험 Tristan didn't even care about the spilled powder on the floor or that he ruined the experiment.
cooties 세균 The kids in the story were afraid they'd catch the cooties if they touched the old moldy cheese on the basketball court.

[ Costumes ]
meaning to ~할 셈이다 She figured that it had probably ended up in Gran's attic, and she kept meaning to look for it, but by then I had gotten used to not wearing it.
ooze 줄줄 흐르다 My ninth I was the Bleeding Scream, the one that has fake blood oozing out over the skull mask.
meltdown 멘붕 On the morning of Halloween, Via had this big crying meltdown about something.
    Via's always been so calm and cool, but this year she's had a couple of these kinds of fits.
비아는 항상 조용하고 쿨하지만, 올해들어 욱할때가 있다.
stressed out 스트레스를 주다 His yelling just stressed out Via even more, and she startd crying louder.
at the last minute 마지막 순간에, 임박해서 So, at the last minute, I threw on the Bleeding Scream costume from last year.

[ The Bleeding Scream ]
go down as ~로 기록되다 I was starting to think this was going to go down as one of the most awesome days in the history of my life, but then I got to homeroom.
shrunken 쪼그라든 He looks exactly like that.
ditch 버리다, 차버리다 Just ditch him.

 

[ Names ]
gut 소화관 I felt like I'd been kicked in the gut.
stomach bug 장염 There's a stomach bug going around.
go around 유행하다
    She helped me to my feet.
그녀는 나를 부축해서 일으켜 세웠다.
runs a temperature 온도가 오르다 If he starts throwing up or runs a temperature, you should call the doctor.
get out of 책임이나 임무를 회피하다 I got out of going to shool the next day, too, which was Friday.
